The pandemic stubbornly continues to refuse to end. But even for our family, one that has undoubtedly taken more precautions than almost any other, to me, it remains…not that bad. There’s a standard cliche about American life where the career-minded man recounts how he regrets the rat race and wishes he would have spent more time with family. For me, the pandemic has given rise to an opportunity to reverse that banality. For sure, the fact that I have a job and understanding management that allows for substantial amounts of remote work enables all this. Many others are not as fortunate. But looking back at the last year and a half plus, I see much more joy than dismay. Jackson has been healthy, with limited illness and only one brief hospital stay, which is great for him. Certainly, his health is a big barometer for our family emotional health. And Luca continues to grow in all areas, while most definitely not loosing his gregarious personality. And I am able to see them both maybe 15 hours a week more than pre-pandemic. In any long term endeavor, days matter, hours matter. And parenthood is maybe the one endeavor where they matter the most. Covid is never going away, but I still look forward to a point where our family has no concerns or limitations. That time has not yet arrived, at least for us, but replacing it with more family time is alright by me. If a family that needs to take precaution can find happiness in these times, here’s to hoping that yours can too.
