Change of Plans

We are constantly canceling or changing plans to accommodate Jackson’s health needs. This usually involves splitting up so that one parent stays home with Jackson and the other goes to a fun event with Luca or, sometimes unfortunately canceling plans altogether and finding someone to watch Luca while we go to the hospital with Jackson. Like most things in our life, our plan for Jackson to start the keto diet a few weeks ago was pushed back.

Jackson had been battling a common cold for a few days when he took a turn for the worse. Around 5:00 am the Monday we were due in the hospital for the keto diet, we called 911 and took an ambulance to the ER. Jackson received a trifecta of medical interventions, which helped decrease both his heart rate and oxygen requirement: IV fluids, IV Motrin and IV antibiotics. He was admitted and stayed for about 36 hours. We were discharged the following evening and he is now much better.

So, we are now scheduled to start the keto diet tomorrow. Fingers crossed Jackson stays healthy, this visit goes as planned and that the keto diet helps to decrease his seizures.

When not making ER trips and inpatient visits, we have been working at the Perlman Center on communication. This is a video from Jackson’s class where he is using eye gaze to communicate. The screen can sense what picture he looks at and will then say the word out loud if he looks at a specific symbol for a designated period of time (It’s either .5 or one second). We are grateful to live in a time and place where this technology is possible.

Enjoy the video, some other pictures of our clan, and also wish us luck this week.

  1. God bless whoever created the communication device that Jackson uses! And tell Luca he has picked the best sport ever 😉
